John (Johannes Michiel) Vaessen, born Feb.20, 1918, predeceased by his loving wife of 61 yrs., Christine (2009) and daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) 2007. Survived by his children, Hilda (Ron), Peter (Janice) and Tony (Carolyn); grandchildren Anthony, Christian, Julian, Dean Cirotto; Nathan (Christina), Jestina Vaessen and their mother, Linda; Christine (Steve), Michael, Jordan (Chelsea) Vaessen and their mother, Kim; Great-grandchildren Dominik, Sophia, Nikola, Voden and Aiden; plus many nieces, nephews and extended family in Canada, USA and the Netherlands.John was born in Helden, Netherlands, the 8th child of 12.At age 21, he joined the Dutch army (KNIL) and was stationed in Indonesia. He survived as a Japanese POW in Burma, Thailand and Singapore. In January 1948 while still in Java, he married Christine Hendrix from Holland. They returned to Holland in 1950 and a year later they emigrated to Canada with children, Gerda (Hilda) and Peter. The young family lived first in New Brunswick then southern Ontario where Betty and Tony were born.John was ready for any task to provide for his family. He worked as a labourer, plant worker (Kelvinator) and maintenance custodian (London School Board).John was an avid card player, enjoyed travelling, fishing and the company of family and good friends.His mind was sharp even in his 103rd year.
