Joseph Bentkowski died peacefully at Extendicare, London, Ontario on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, in his 95th year. Beloved husband of the late Leokadia Bentkowski (2023). Loving father of Henry Bentkowski and Wanda Bentkowski (Tony Hitchins). Cherished brother of Fr. John Betkowski, Krystyna Siniowski and Jenny Kosar. Joseph will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews and their families. Predeceased by his sisters Stasia Szymkiewicz (1972) and Teresa Teper (2012). Special thanks go to the staff of Extendicare for their loving and compassionate care of dad.
Joseph was born in Belweder, Poland, a small settlement about 200 km south of Warsaw. He has a remarkable history, surviving the exile to Siberia in 1940, a long journey to Iran when the Polish people were given amnesty, and a journey that eventually reunited the family in England after the war, and then to Canada in 1952.
Joseph was recognized for his service in the Polish community in London, primarily working with the church, Our Lady of Czestochowa, including sponsoring Polish refugees to London, and the Polish Combatants Association (SPK). We are mourning one of the few remaining survivors of WWII from the Polish community.
The Funeral Service will be celebrated in the Holy Family Mausoleum of St. Peter’s Cemetery, London on Monday, February 26, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a private family burial. In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, https://cancer.ca/en , or Alzheimer Society of Canada, https://alzheimer.ca/en .
