Kataryna Sochan

June 8, 1929 — April 28, 2024

London

It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the news of the passing of Kataryna (Basaraba) Sochan of London, Ontario at the age of 94. Kataryna was born in Tauriv, Ukraine. After surviving the perils of World War II and forcible transport to Germany, she immigrated to Canada. Here, in 1950, she met and married her husband Roman Sochan. They were devoted to each other for 58 years until his passing. Kataryna started working in Canada as a domestic servant and went on to work in agriculture for many years, before transitioning to a career as a nurse’s aide. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, cooking, sewing, cross stitching, knitting, crocheting, and re-upholstering antique furniture. The beauty of flowers never failed to bring her joy.

Kataryna was predeceased by her parents Ivan and Maria Basaraba, stepmother Sophie Basaraba, brother Walter Basaraba, sister Helen Paczko and brother-in-law Joseph Paczko. Kataryna will be deeply missed by her three children: Peter Sochan, Irene Parsons (Brian) and Olga Filipowich (Peter); seven grandchildren: Larissa Vafiades (Nicholas), Magdalena Filipowich, Andrij Filipowich (Lucas), Christina Parsons (Ames), Philip Sochan, Kataryna Sciascia (Andrew), and Bohdan Filipowich; and two great grandchildren: Kalliope and James Vafiades. Kataryna also leaves behind her nephew Peter Paczko, great nephew Jacob Paczko, and her niece Patricia Spytkowsky and family.
