Manuel Moniz Lopes Tavares

Manuel Moniz Lopes Tavares, was born February 14, 1933, in the village of  Sao Bras, the island of Sao Miguel, in the Azores, Portugal. He was the sixth child out of a total of six sons and a daughter born to Honorato Lopes Tavares and Maria Jose Correia Moniz. He went to school locally, worked with his family, and was drafted into the Portuguese army. After serving in the military in 1956 he immigrated to Canada. He later returned to the Azores and married his intended Maria Isabel Moniz Bulhoes in 1957. He returned to Canada and later helped three of his brothers also to immigrate. He worked on various farms, and construction in Toronto. In 1960 he was able to bring his wife and daughter Maria da Conceicao to Canada. They had a son, Jose Melo, and after moving to London, Ontario they had another son Julio Melo. He eventually worked at Westinghouse for 17 years, and was a survivor of a serious illnesses. He left behind his wife of almost 66 years marriage his daughter Maria da Conceicao(Alfredo Chaves), Jose(Mary Tavares) and Julio (Sherry Tavares) and 11 grandchildren Christopher, David, Justin, Diane, Janine, Dana, Daniel, Adam, Jordan, Abby, Noah, and 13 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his brothers Jose, Antonio, Agostinho, and Jacinto. He also leaves behind his elder sister Alexandrina (who will be 102 on September 25) and his youngest brother Carlos who is 86, and many Godchildren, nephews and nieces, thank you to the doctors, nurses, and PSW‘s at Victoria Hospital that cared for Manuel. You are forever in our hearts! Visitors will be received in the O’Neil Funeral Home, 350 William St., London on Sunday, September 10,  2023  from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be celebrated in the O’Neil Funeral Home, 350 William St. London, on Monday, September 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment in St. Peter’s Cemetery, London.
