Peacefully in London, on Saturday, Feb 19, 2022, Margarete Marie Sharo (Nee: Kaupp) at the age of 92. Beloved wife of Christopher (Chris) for 67 years. Loving mother of Peter Kaupp (Micheline) and Joanne Glenn (nee: Sharo) (Mike). Proud grandmother of Christian and Amanda Kaupp and Tamara Smith (Bob Yeoman) and Charles (Chad) Smith (predeceased). Great grandmother of Kayla and Ethan Kaupp and Adeline, Benjamin and Jack Yeoman. Sadly missed as well by her nieces and nephews Gabby Patterson of Georgia, USA, Beate (Thilo) Wennel, Bruno (Debra) Neumann, Manfred (Rosie) Kirschner and Christiane Kirschner of Germany.
Born in Steinau an den Strasse, Germany, on May 25, 1929, Margarete (aka Gretchen), was the daughter of Johannes and Toni (nee Metz) and the second youngest of her siblings (Matlide, Olga, Hans, Kathe, Luise, Wilhelm and Maria).
Margarete attended the Dr. Oetker Cooking School and always had a passion for baking.
Margarete survived World War II and immigrated to Canada in Sept. 1954 to Quebec on the SS Arosa Kuhn, and worked as an au pair for a family in Outremont, Quebec.
Margarete and Chris met when she was waiting to disembark her train and asked Chris, who was working for the CN cleaning trains, where she could get a cup of coffee. The canteen was closed and Chris sat with Margarete, talked to her and gave her his address. A week later, Chris arrived home and Margarete had visited him and was sitting in the kitchen talking to his mother. That was the start of a whirlwind romance, and they married on Jan. 8, 1955. Shortly after they moved to St. Hubert, Quebec.
Margarete worked as a Kindergarten teacher for many years at the St. Hubert Airforce Base and other elementary schools. She then worked as a supply teacher. She also helped in Chris' part time floral business, "Flowers by Christopher".
Margarete was a cancer survivor and enjoyed life to the fullest. She was an avid gardener, loved to read, sew and knit. She enjoyed the outdoors from camping in Algonquin Park to skiing in Stowe, Vermont. During the summer she enjoyed biking in the neighbourhood. In 1993, Chris and Margarete moved to London, Ontario.
Margarete enjoyed travelling throughout Canada and the US by train and car. In her retirement years, she and Chris went on numerous cruises to Europe, Australia and through the Panama Canal.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
