The family would like to share a little of
their history. Born on the sunny island of Sao
Miguel, Portugal, Maria’s earliest and fondest
memories were playing in the “quintas” with her
brothers and sisters, picking fruits, raising
chickens and going to “festas” in her little
town. At sixteen years old, Maria met and wed the
love of her life, Antonio Barbosa. Maria and
Antonio had seven children, unfortunately losing
a son at an early age. After several years caring
for her children alone in Portugal, while her
husband built a new life for them in Canada, they
were finally reunited in 1964. Maria’s family,
along with her extended family, almost filled an
entire plane as they departed for their long trip
to Canada. Shortly after arriving in Canada,
Maria had her final child, Lourdes in 1966, a true Canadian.
Following in her footsteps, Maria’s children
married and started families of their own, giving
her fourteen grandchildren. Maria loved to see
her grandchildren taking turns eating at the
beloved little kitchen set in her basement
kitchen, while living in Toronto. Maria’s legacy
continued throughout the generations as she was
blessed with eighteen great grandchildren. Her
greatest joy in life was to have her children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren together,
something that brought a beaming smile and glow to her face.
Maria’s sweet, kind and gentle demeanor is
something that will be cherished by God and the
angels as it was by all those who knew her. Her
family looks forward to celebrating her life,
knowing that she will be joining us in spirit.
Rest in peace Maria, you were and always will be,
loved by all. In honor of Maria Barbosa,
