William John Thomson

March 8, 1957 — December 27, 2024

London, Ontario

It is with profound sadness that we let you know of the passing of our beloved brother John, aged 67, in mid December 2024 in London, Ontario. John had been suffering from several health problems.

He was born on March 18th, 1957, on his oldest sister's birthday. He grew up on a farm near Woodbridge, Ontario with his brother and three sisters. He was the son of immigrants to Canada and he took pride in his Slovak heritage. He had a brilliant mind. He was fascinated by science fiction, created his own Star Trek communicator, designed and made his own 3 hole golf course on the farm property. After high school, John studied Engineering at McMaster University.

But his love of God and his desire to share that with others called him to leave his Engineering studies and to enter seminaries in London, Ontario, France, and Minnesota. John had a keen interest in Theology and Ecclesiastical Chant. He would later go on to direct choirs in multiple parishes. For John, nothing was more important than God and his Catholic Faith.Later, John left the seminary and started his career in the field of computer science. He enjoyed his time collaborating with his brother Vince on a couple of contracts for the Federal and Quebec governments.During the last part of his career, John worked for a human resource company in London, Ontario in IT.

He took pride in helping his colleagues in London and across Canada, speaking both English and French to do so.John, with his strong faith in God, was a devout member of, and for a time the Men's Choir director at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. John was easy to talk with and showed much cheerfulness even when his health was poor. He loved learning and was eager to share this with others. He had a dry sense of humour so any conversation with him included a good laugh.

He will be missed by his brother Vince Thomson, and sisters Pat Cooney, Cindy Thomson, Lori Thomson and their families: his nephew Michael Cooney, his nieces Andrea Cooney, Angela Cooney, Leslie Thomson, Christine Thomson, Michelle Gray and their families, and his niece Tasmin Brown and nephew Tristan Brown.

He is predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law John Cooney and his niece Lara Cooney. John will be missed by his family, friends, and his priest and friend, Father Saunders and the parishioners of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.

While our hearts mourn the loss, we take comfort in knowing that he had a great faith in God and practised his faith consistently, receive Holy Communion regularly until the time of his death.

Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, January 10th at O'Neil Funeral Home in London. A Funeral Requiem Mass will be officiated by Father Saunders at 11:00 a.m. on January 11th at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. This will be followed by burial at St. Peter's Cemetery in London, with a reception afterwards in the basement of the church.
